Buffalo News

Reliever Francisco Cabrera issues a bases loaded walk to Andy Dominque in the ninth ining as the Buffalo Bison fell hard to Pawtucket 4-3, in the International League season opener for both teams Thursday night.

Dominique's walk capped a three run rally for the Red Sox, playing before 8,964 in McCoy Stadium.

Buffalo held a 3-1 lead going into the ninth, but Pawtucket loaded the bases with one out on an error by losing pitcher Matt Miller and singles by Tony Schrager and Mike Curry. Carlos Febles grounded a two run single to center to tie the game. After Cabrera reliever Miller, Febles and Curry executed a double steal.

"This was Cabrera's first Triple-A game, and something we worked on in spring training was his awareness," said Bisons manager Marty Brown. "He's a big guy and his times to the plate are not as quick as they can be, plus he has a high leg kick. I think just holding the ball is something he's going to have to learn how to do. But they got some big hits in the ninth. Matt pitched behind in the count more than he wanted to, and it allowed them to do some good things."

Kevin Youkilis was walked intentionally to load the bases, and then Cabrera walked Dominique to force in the winning run.

The Paw Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Robert Ellis on Dominique's single.

Buffalo tied it at 1-1 in the sixth against Matt Duff on Brandon Phillips' double and Ernie Young's bloop single.

Matt Crozier gave Buffalo a 2-1 lead in the seventh with a mammoth home run, a 420 foot blast that hit the roof of a concession stand in dead center.

The Bisons added a run in the eighth on Grady Sizemore's sacrfice fly.
