For the second time in as many nights in the Midwest League season the Peoria Chiefs got a strong effort from their starting pitcher.
On Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, a night after squandering a four run lead and losing in 11 innings, the Chiefs took advantage of Jordan Pals' strong outing to best Cedar Rapids 7-2.
Pals, a 6 for 8 right hander who pitched at Eastern Illinois University, allowed just four hits and two runs in six innings. A trio of relievers gave up just one hit the rest of the way.
Cody Haerther led off the third inning with a home run to give the guests a 3-1 lead.
Right fielder Tyler Parker, whose dropped fly ball on Thursday led to two unearned runs and extra ininngs, came back a night later for a three run homer to left field that put the game out of reach at 7-1.
Kevin Jepsen, one of the Anaheim Angels' top prospected lasted just 4 1/3 innings in the loss.

It wasn't a clean performance by any means. But at least Kevin Jepsen was on the Memorial Stadium mound. The promising 19 year old was shut down a little less than halfway through last Midwest League season after incurring an elbow injury that led to havin bone chips removed. That surgery prematurely ended a breakthrough year in which Jepsen was selected for the MWL's all star game.
The righthander made his first start and appearance in a game since May 24 last night and ended up the losing pitcher as the Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped a 7-2 decison to the Peoria Cheifs. He lasted 4.1 innings before his 80 pitch allotment was used. Jepsen allowed six hits and four runs, striking out five. Not great numbers, but a start-literatlly.
"He made some pitches with two strikes that were around the zone, threw some pitches that were too good when he was ahead in the count," said Kernels manager Bobby Magallanes. "I think that hurt him. But I thought he pitched all right, especially considering he missed half the year last year."
Jepsen's velocity was in the normal low 90s range. he used his slider a lot more than usual because it was particularly effective.
Peoria (1-1) grouped two doubled down the third base line and a single down the first base line to get two second inning runs against Jepsen. Cody Haerther hit a 400 foot leadoff home run to right center in the third.
Jepsen left with a runner on and one out in the fifth with that runner, Mike McCoy eventually scoring on two stolen bases and a throwing error past third by Kernels catcher Tommy Duenas. "That was the first major injury i've had," said Jepsen. a 2002 second round draft pitch who went 6-3 wiht a 2.65 earned run average in 10 starts for the Kernels last season. "It's always tough being on the DL. Being injured and not being able to play is real tough. But I came back from it, and i'm 100 percent now."
Peoria scored four game breaking runs in the fifth, three of them charged to reliever Scott Hindman. Tyler Parker's three run home run just over the tall fence in dead left culminated the rally.
Peoria had eight hits, five for extra bases, and stole five bases, three by McCoy. "They're an aggressive team, I saw that (Thursday) night," said Magallanes. The Kernels (1-1) were limited to five hits against four pitchers.
Starter and winner Jordan Pals lasted six innings, allowing four hits and both Kernels runs.
Kernels Knowledge
Kernels outfielder Warner Madrigal did no play last night and is day to day because of a wrist injury he suffered on a swing in Thursday's game.
Pitcher Michel Simard threw a scoreless inning of relief last night, even though he is scheduled to start Monday night's gmae against Clinton. Magallanes said this was a day Simard was scheduled to throw a pregame bullpen anyway, so the decision was made to us him in the game for an inning instead.

Matt Dryer and Matt Pagnozzi had leadoff doubles to left, and Pagnozzi scored on Milko Jaramillo's single past first base.

Bobby Wilson doubled past third with out out and scored on Caleb Maher's two out single past third.

Cody Haerther led off with a home run to right center.

Mike McCoy led off with an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Haerther and John Santor walked and scored on Tyler Parker's two out three run home run to left.
Bottom 6th
Sean Rodriguez led off with a single to left and eventually scored on a two out wild pitch.
