It came late in the series and in the game, but the confluence of good pitching and timely hitting finally made it to the Dayton Dragons' side of the field Tuesday night.
All four Dayton pitcher did well, including starter Jon George, who gave up foour runs in the first inning. A five hit, six run binge int he sixth inning led by a two run Joey Votto homer and Walter Olmstead's second triple, helped the Dragons to an 8-5 victory over the Fort Wayne Wizards on a chill night at Fifth Third Field.
A total of 8,050 tickets were sold for the Class A Midwest League game, and many fans departed early as the night became frostier.
"Everybody was too worried about what they were doing numbers wise." said Olmstead, who was hitting .240 on the season but just .200 over the previous eight games. "What you need is confidence. When you get up there and your pitchers are getting guys out, you have to hit the ball."
George looked like he wasn't going to make it out of the first inning, but he almost got out of it when a possible double play ended up just short of completetion.
Eventually George allowed all five Fort Wayne runs in the first two innings, after which Calvin Medlock, Bradley George and David Shafer shut down the Wizards, including striking out seven of the final nine batters.
Even better, the Dragons got plenty of hits out of the bottom of their order. Olmstead hits sixth, second baseman Habelito Hernandez followed and had two singles and just over the .100 mark in batting and reserve Evan Conly had two hits, including a double, hitting eigth. Catcher Miguel Perez had only one hit, but he was also hit with a pitch.
