Michael Simard pitched seven scoreless innings and Bob Zimmermann threw two perfect innings in relief to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels past the West Michigan White Caps, 3-0 in a Midwest League baseball game last night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Simard (2-1) gave up six hits, walked three and struck out four. Zimmermann struck out one in two innings and earned his third save.
Aaron Peel's double in the top of the second drove in Matt Pali for the Kernels' first run.
Quad Cosby scored on a Brandon Wood RBI double in the third inning, and Matt Brown scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Cedar Rapids (12-8) remained tied for first place with Clinton in the Midwest League's Western Division.
Chris Steinborn (0-3) pitched nine innings and took the loss for the White Caps (7-13)
