One mistake proved costly for the South Bend SilverHawks Saturday night.
An error by shortstop Tila Reynolds in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed Cody Haerther to cross the plate with the game's only run, helping the Peoria Chiefs to a 1-0 victory over South Bend in the opener of a Midwest League baseball doubleheader. The second game was postponed because of inclement weather.
Haerther got the rally started by drawing a one out walk from Hawks reliever Aric LeClair (0-2). He advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around on Reynolds' miscue off the bat of Terry Evans.
South Bend's best scoring chance came in the seventh when it loaded the bases with one out.
Peoria starter Jordan Pals escaped by getting Alberto Gonzalez to bounce into a double play.
Pals (2-2) scattered eight hits and fanned four over eight innings.
Hawks' righty William Juarez tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out six.
Gonzalez and Michael Goss had two hits apiece for South Bend.
